43hm gear shift knob

i have a 43 h-m with steel knobs built into the gear shift --a young fellow told me this was a war year tractor--any answers are welcome--thanks

Yup. Rubber was more scarce than steel whilst Uncle Sam was consuming both for war production. Between Japan controlling many of the places the raw materials came from, and their ability to sink shipping of what we could get hold of, rubber got scarce enough to even warrant rationing tires. During those years, the shift knobs were steel rather than the customary rubber.

yes a war model tractor. if you want to be real accurate the knob is cast iron. iron was more available during ww2 than steel. john deere changed some of their tractor frames to cast from steel angle during the war.
