Farmall Regular still baffled!

We have a Farmall Regular that has hot spark and feels like it has good compression. Tractor ran with original E4a mag and died when it got hot so, I assumed it had a bad coil and switched to A F4 that I had as a spare and had been tested. Hand cranked tractor and it started and ran but, was running hot and backfiring so, I figured the timing was retarded and after running a few minutes I shut it down. Before changing timing I tried to hand start and no success, pulled it and started and died. Pulled again and nothing and blew oil out of air cleaner. Put new coil in mag as someone suggested and will only pull start and we ran 5 minutes and it ran fine but, will not crank start. Any ideas what is wrong.?Anyway to check compression? Old timer I took it too says he feels like the compression is good but knows of no way to check with out starter. Thanks for any help!

Duanes, I still think you are going the wrong direction. Compression does not go bad over night. If I run my Regular and turn the main jet screw on top of carb in to lean out the fuel it will start to miss and back fire. turn it out for more fuel it should run smooth. If you pulled your tractor and it was in reverse you would push oil out the air breather. A) F-4 has spark. B) you have compression the tractor runs.
C) you need correct fuel to keep it running.
You need all three of these. Think of the simple fix first. Oldiron29

Duanes,I have a Regular and a F20,and it seems my regular runs a lot hotter than my 20.I dont know if this is normal. In order to change mags you had to change drives,am I correct? With the plug out and your finger in the plug hole is the mag firing when the piston is at TDC and the throw of the crank is on the down side.To me it sounds like you have a timing issue. Also take your breather cup off and try starting it,I had mine fill up with water and sucked it through the carb

Pulled the tractor forward and yes it did start by pulling it but, won't even fire when cranking it and fuel added through primer cups. Priming cups were closed up before trying to start.
Spark is set a little advanced right now.

have you cleaned the spark plugs there very touchy about starting always have to clean mine about once a week when they dont get used hard and usually monthly if i use them alot

If it will pull start and run fine then sounds like the impulse on the mag is not working correctly. If you are still having running issues, take inspection cover off to make sure mag is tripping just after the crank reaches TDC. If the only thing you changed was the mag, carb and compression issues likely are not the problem. Step back take a breath and recheck.

Duanes, Eather to much fuel or not enough! Trial and error again 3) things need Fuel, Compression and spark. Focus on the carb float setting. If you give it some fuel than turn off the fuel at tank so you don't flood it. turn main jet screw on top of carb all the way in and back out
2 1/2 turns and go from there. Try another set of plugs gap at .25 Don't give up it will run
