plow shears

I have 3 pairs of plow shears that have 0556 for a number but half of them have soft center and the others have hard center on them.
I am just wonder why there would be a difference. Different soil?

Soft center steel on plow wear parts develops that shiny land polish that people like to see when plowing. Some say it tends to scour better in heavy ground also. It also somewhat resists shock from say smacking a rock. When wearing down these parts and you hit the "soft center" (you can tell by looking at the steel when it wears) they will wear extremely fast. Oliver had an offset soft center where there was more wear surface on the front of the share or moldboard before hitting the soft center.

The "hard" shares (some call these "solid" or "solid steel") would probably last slightly longer in normal conditions.
