H voltage regulator question

I have a bad volotage regulator on my H. Today I went to buy a new one and was given the option of a regulator that is rated at 24-36 amps or 38-44 amps. When I purchased the one that went bad, I was not presented the two options. I know common sense would say to buy the exact one I had been using, but I don't know if the one I was using was correct to start with. Which regulator would be the best on my H with a stock 6v generator? Thanks.

Ummmm....the correct regulator for the stock 6 volt H limits generator output to 16 - 18 amps. Continuous output higher than that can burn out the generator in short order.

Recommend going elsewhere for a replacement! It sounds like the outfit you are dealing with now doesn't know their regulator applications very well...

That is pretty much what I was thinking.

Unlike Bob or Jim who may have some IHC specs, I doubted if the stock 6 volt H genny was more then 20 amps. Its more important than many think to correctly match the VR to the genny otherwise it may cause more field current to flow then the fields are rated for (trying to get 30 amps out) and they will overheat.

Sounds to me like like EITHER of those VR's may NOT be for the stock H genny but thats only an educated guess mind you.

Ok. Thanks guys. I thought it was odd that their would be two different applications. I saw the book myself and it did list two different regulators, so I know the guy behind the counter was looking at the correct item. I think my best bet may be just going through another source. Thanks again for the great info.
