Rear left wheel (axle) is stuck

I finally got my grandfather"s 1952 Farmall M to run only to find out the rear left wheel does not turn. It has an M&W clutch setup.

How big of a job is it to investigate this problem? Is there a good manual to use? I"m currently using the newer shop manuals (I"m not impressed).

most probable cause would be the brake band is seized to hub.pull the brake cover off on that side if you cant get it to break free.that could be fun too.

i think nebraska kirk that posts on nebraska cowmans
board is the guy you need to contact. either he or kirk in ks has quite a few parts and manuals for the m+w set up. if your m is a late 52, it may have disc brakes too. try nebraska cowman dot com

Thanks to all for the replies. I do not need the M&W clutch and would like to remove it permanently. Is there a way to efficiently & inexpensively revert the tractor back to its pre-M&W days?

No easy way. The needed parts include pinion, bearings seals, brake drum (depending on original), brake linkage, Housing cover, gaskets and possible small parts.
Removing the top cover and sliding the left axle out to allow the bull gear to move rearward are all part of the deal. Jim

I wanted to follow up my original post with my findings:

It was indeed the brake band within the M&W clutch housing. The right brake is still usable but the left, within the clutch housing, was full of corrosion from a rusted brake band. This must have been caused from rain from a deteriorated leather boot. I covered it using the Red Green method (duct tape) but it must have been too late. I'm planning on removing the aluminum bracket, having a shoe shop make a boot, and reinstalling with rivets and glue to seal it when it is replaced.
