Bigger hitch for my 400?

Is there/was there a heavier hitch made for the F400 or will one fit off of a later tractor? Will the original hold up to a 10T spreader with half-a-load of composted horse apples? It is a 1" bar...

Thanks,
Mike

The W-400 bar is heavier. Much heavier. I can take measurements if you want.

I assume the same goes for 9 series bars. I should have one of those from which I can take measurements as well.

Howdy Wardner! 6's & 9's had the same length bar? I thought the 9's were a bit longer than the 6's between the pinholes. This has me all 6's & 7's. If you get a chance & could do some measuring, that'd be great.

Thanks,
Mike

P.S. Have you discovered the joys of malteds, yet?

No malteds yet. I am still trying to figure out the Joys of Cex.

Cross section of W-400 bar is 1.25" x 2.75".
Pin center to pin center is approximately 53.5".

Looks like I don't have a 9 series drawbar. But if it was longer, that would be a good thing. You could cut off the beat-up ends and start afresh with new holes.

Another alternative would be a fork lift tine. Have a truck spring shop bend it the way you want.

And then there are TD-6 and TD-9 drawbars. There is some heavy metal there.

When that happened to the drawbar on the M, Dad found another piece of steel the same size and welded it on, doubling the thickness of the bar.

I've seen many drawbars reinforced like that.

The fact that the drawbar is bending is a good indication that you're trying to move something that's too heavy for the tractor.

The bar on the W6 is a 1.25". I didn't think it was heavier. Hopefully that should take care of a little sag. The one on the 400 droops a bit already with no load. I'm sure that don't help any.

Thanks & malteds are almost better than cex.

No arguement here. I also believe the spreader is a bit big. It's the only one I have for the time being & am trying to make do. I figure if I can keep the load over the axles, I shouldn't do too badly. I'm going to give the W6 drawbar a try. It's a 1/4" heavier & is perfectly straight. That should help my case some. I also have to turn the rear wheels around & slide them in all the way. This way I can keep the load by the carriers. I'll probably end up reinforcing the original hitch on the 400 if the W6 bar won't do.

Thanks,
Mike

I assume you are talking about the swing drawbar? If so I seem to recall that there was a after-market support made of angle iron that was welded to the drawbar, It was atleast1/2 thick and the sides of the angles were as wide as the drawbar. If the hanging down was 1 in. or so longer this would give more strength. Also you could make a channel by adding vertical piece of iron. None of my tractors has this so I have no pictures. Maby someone can add a picture. Armand

Yessir, the swinging drawbar is the droopy one. I'm going to try the drawbar off of the W6, first & then go with a modification. The lack of a welder, at the moment, is keeping me away from any good creative solution. I will keep your idea in mind.

Thanks,
Mike

On the Allis 140S I am refurbishing the manual says that there was a factory kit for the D-14/WD tractors. They showed a picture. It is the same thing as all the cobbled up crap you see on most tractors, but it bolted on instead of welding. It spanned the section of the drawbar that was around the hoop and then bolted on either side.
FYI - They said the 140 bu spreader required a "three bottom tractor"

Sir: Please define "cobbled-up crap"! Something properly fabericated and painted in MHO is not "cobbled-up crap"!!! Armand

Is that a serious question? Just go to the junkyard and look at some of the drawbars. They would take just about any scrap of steel and weld it to the drawbar. I guess not much of that looks properly fabricated to me.
His doubled up hoop doesn't look too bad. The best I have seen was on an H where they took another drawbar and then chopped it off so you could use all of the holes in the hoop. You don't see that very often.
