340 Utility problems

Are there any known problems with the hydrolic systems on the 340 utility (gas). Bought a 340 U not running and wouldn't time. Tore into it to discover the gear on the hydro pump had ground half the cam gear down all the way around. What should I look for as to why this would happen? Could the problem be in the pump or could the filter be clogged? Could the gear on the hydro pump possibly be the wrong size? I do not know what has been done to the tractor. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

They do not have a history of failure. Some times the gear can loosen on the hydraulic pump and wear the teeth from bad clearance. I would replace all the gears from the crank/cam/distributor,and pump. Make sure shafts are unworn and put locktite on the threads (torqued to spec). It will be fine. Jim

that is a problem with a poor design or mounting spot for the pump. the worst is winter operation when the oil is stiff and it puts extra stress on the cam gear to run the pump.
