Rebuilt carburetor with OEM repair kit. Runs too rich and carbons plugs in about 30 minutes. Have read that OEM carb kits sometimes have too short mixture adjusting screws. Could this be my problem? Turning adjusting screw has no effect on engine. Thanks

You might check your float. My C has a Carter UT, and had a leaky float. I could not find a float, so found the leak and soldered it up after opening up the leaky spot and draining/drying it out. That was about 10 years ago, and still holds up. My biggest issue is leaky needle valve, but as long as I shut off the fuel when done for the day it does ok.

I have a 1953 Super C that had a Carter UT carb on it and it was nothing but constant problems. Several rebuild kits later installed by a couple of carb shops and it just never would run right. I found a Zenith NOS carb for it at a RPRU from Justin Weber and it has been a top notch runner ever since. That was my solution to the Carter UT problem and if you choose to keep working with your Carter I wish you the best with your issues, Hal.

I agree. If the Carter carb can be made functional again with a good cleaning and a rebuild kit, then by all means that is what should be done, but I would caution anyone that has a Carter to remove it from the tractor and open it up before you buy the kit. If the float is trashed, and cannot be repaired by soldering, then you may as well bite the bullet right now and find a Zenith or Marvel-Schebler. Both the Zenith and MS carbs are readily available brand new, and the price is not all that bad compared to buying a used Zenith that needs lots of work before it can be installed.

The attached image is from the original manual and is the same as on the tractor. It is not a dual fuel unit and is same as the unit as shown in top of picture. The top idle adjusting screw does not seem to have any effect on engine idle. No matter where I set that adjusting screw the engine seems to run too rich.[Kicks out black smoke as if the choke is closed]. The plugs then carbon up and start to miss.

I have made sure the float is not leaking and the float valve seems to operate properly. I check this by moving float with base off and blowing through the fuel input line.

Its as if the replacement idle adjusting screw from the OEM repair kit is not doing what it is should be doing, controlling the amount of fuel at idle. So if its not controlling it at idle it likely is allowing fuel to get through the port at all engine speeds.

The screw measures 1.080" from the base of the head to the tip.

It appears the original carb was designed to handle two fuels [gas and kerosene]but perhaps does not do a good job at either!

You are experiencing the same issues I had with the Carter UT I had on my Super C. It would only run for a short period (a couple hours or so) before plugs were loaded with carbon and needed cleaning or changed as they would start to foul out. There was a constant exhaust of black smoke which never ceased. That issue is why I went to the Zenith which has been fine ever since, Hal.
