New Owner of 1966 140

I have recently come to own a 1966 Farmall 140. I've checked my serial numbers and I am sure of the year. I know nothing about the tractor. It has turf tires and came with a Mott hammer mower attachment connected to it. I was told all it was used for was to cut fields at a country school. Many acres of field grass. Everything ran fine until this year. I tried starting it and found the push button had rusted and shorted out. I replaced the push button, points and condensor. Still can't get it running. (no spark)I don't know if it has a generator or alternator. It's all pianted over. It's a 12volt system because that's what battery is in it. The coil is also painted so I can't tell if the new one is supposed to be internal or external resistance. So I haven't replaced that yet. I would really like to get it going so I can slowly restore it to almost showroom to drive around in our local parades. I know its only a 1966 but it's old to me. Any help would be appreciated.

I have owned a 1966 140 since 1966 (well, I was 14 when my father brought it home). She was born with a 12V negative ground generator/regulator system. You will find the regulator on the left side between the hydraulics and the air cleaner (square box with wires coming out of it) close to the serial number plate. If it's hooked up you still have a generator. If it''s gone or disconnected, then someone probably put an alternator in.

If you are going to replace the coil, don't worry about the old one, just get a 12v coil that does not need a resistor. A NAPA IC14 works fine. If there is a resistor, get rid of it. The tractor did not come with it and you don't need it.

There is lots written on here by people more knowledgeable than I about how to troubleshoot your spark problem. Search, get a test light, and start troubleshooting. It's a great tractor and I bet she's running soon.

It ran when you parked it so just look for what happened while sitting there must be a bad connection someplace as the gen and starter didnt burn up when sitting. Is the battery any good and are the connections clean sounds like it set outside or how elxe did the starter button get rusted.

If you cannot distinguish between a generator and an alternator, your accumulated experience is far too little to be doing much with tractor repair. An on-site mentor is needed.

First thing I'd try, as you installed new points, is to crank it with the cap off (probably need a helper or a remote starting switch) and see if there's a series of sparks at the points as it turns- might just need a points adjustment, might be a touch of oil on the points, etc. If you've got correct gap and sparks there, the primary side is working, then you work upstream to the coil, etc. Many times a bad coil wire will snafu you, but as it was OK until you changed the points, I'd bet on that, pretty common

since you replaced points and condenser, making sure that the condenser wire did not turn and ground out as you tightened the nut on point and condenser. did you set point gap on high side of distb. cam? if you turn on ign.switch test lite should lite on + side of coil.by opening points test lite should lite on - side of coil. NAPA makes a set of ign. wires that are still wire. if you left wires on dist.cap while you were doing this good. if not you will have put compression stroke on tdc and see where rotor is pointed and put wires in right. good luck
