656 farmall PTO acting up

Allen or Others

I have a 656 farmall/ihc 1967 model with standard 5 speed trans 263 gas burner
While baling hay yesterday with my 851 NH I went over some rough ground (bumpey) My baler was hooked farther away than I meant(It"s where I thought I had always hooked it, but in a hurry, I guess not. Anyway the pto shaft came apart in the center(slipped apart) I moved my drawbar in and hooked back up. It had approx 3/4 bale inside but when I turned on my pto, it would not take off. Finally did and now it seems to want to stop turning if the bale gets full. Never had any problem before including stopping and starting bale. Could it have gotten out of adjustment or something???? If you keep turning it off and on, it will start up. And will start up if it is empty. HELP Please

It is not likely that the clutch pressure adjustment changed.

Was the PTO running when it came apart? If it was it is possible that when it separated the end came around and locked up against the draw bar and cause the clutch to slip. That could have damaged the clutch pack.

If the PTO was not running, the sliding shaft may have jammed before it came apart and forced the PTO shaft forward in the PTO unit. I've seen this happen where it breaks the snap ring groove out of the rear housing allowing the clutch assembly to move forward in the housing. This causes the oil sealing rings to leak resulting in lowered apply pressure to the clutch pack.Either way the PTO assembly has to be removed for repair.

Thanks Owen. It was not running when it came apart and you are probably correct. something happened during that time. Will it be a large and expensive job?? The last rear pto I took out was from a 460 and it had a independent pto. It was almost self explanatory.
Thanks for your help.

It is a lot like the later 460 PTOs but uses hydraulics to engage the clutch rather than an over center type clutch. If you can turn the shaft by hand most likely the snap ring that holds the rear bearing in place has been dislodged from it's groove.

Once you remove the assembly from the rear frame you can remove the pump/oil pickup assembly and get at the clutch. You can then see the three brake pistons. If you can turn the shaft, and the pistons are not worn into the aluminum, your shaft has moved ahead.

To remove the clutch drum you need to remove the piston return spring. That is probably the hardest part of the job. You will need some way to compress the spring to remove the snap ring.

The other thing you will need is pressure gauge and an adapter fitting to set the pressure after you reinstall it. The fitting most people use is the orifice for the 706/806 belt pulley attachment. Part number 384328R1.

Owen----Again Thanks so much. I plan on taking a hard look at it today to decide what to do. I may have to call on you again before this is over.
And Thanks again
Jerry
