Distributor work

Take a look at the photo. Please tell a real beginner what he's looking at. Left to right, distributor, distributor housing, and distributor bracket off an H. If I should take this group apart at the arrows tell me what I can expect? Since this system of housings is so closely associated with the oil filler housing I'm wondering whether there's gonna be oil involved with this disassembly. If I disassemble to do some cleaning can I get this back together with the appropriate, new, gaskets? Also this tractor used to run with an alternator. Does anything here need to be changed/replaced if I choose to go with a generator system on the restoration? Finally ... would someone be able to send along a good closeup photo of the right side of an H engine block showing the electrical setup complete with a 12 volt generator system?

David You can take it apart at the arrow next to the distributor. But first remove the distributor cap and turn the motor over so that the rotor is pointing to number one plug wire which is at 1o clock. then don't turn the motor untill you put the distributer back on.

Hmm ... what if she's pretty well torn apart at this point? I don't imagine there's a change in heck I'm going to get the engine to crank - no way. Am I out of luck? Once I remove the distributor and distributor housing am I free to also remove the bracket (up against the oil fill)?

You remove No1 sparkplug near the radiator then hold your thumb over the plug hole while a helper hand cranks the engine until you feel pressure. I would drop a long plastic straw on top of the piston then have the helper to keep slowly hand cranking the engine while you watch the straw rise. When it quits rising your No1 piston should be TDC on the compression stroke.

Rotate your rotor so its pointing to the No1 plug tower on the cap which is around 1 o'clock and install the distributor. Hal

There is no issue with oil in any of those housings.
As mentioned, if it ran when shut off, it is just important to get it together the exact same way.
The rotor should be used to mark a point on the housing where it is pointed now. The location of the distributor housing on the extension housing should be marked with a chisel across the metal to assure an alignment. If it is reinstalled in that configuration, it will be OK.
A coil mounts to the top of the extension on the bolt shown.
a wire from the positive terminal on the coil connects to the distributor side terminal. (assumes positive ground 6v as from the factory)
a wire from the neg terminal on the coil goes directly to the ignition switch in the elect box.
There are many photos in the gallery. There are no issues with the generator fitting where it belongs. We do not know what year or specific model it is so describing the charging system needs to wait until we are informed. Jim

It will have a cutout relay on the generator. That cutout will have a field terminal that is used only if the tractor was not equipped with lights. If it had factory lights, the F terminal on the cutout is not used.
There will be a four position light sw. LHDB
the F terminal on the Gen will attach only to the light switch. A page or two below this post is a post with a picture of the diagram for an H. Jim
