Super C - how to replace steering u-joints?

Working my way through the SC and notice the u-joints for the steering are real worn and loose. It looks like the front one is serviceable such that the spider can be replaced, is that true? Can you still get those parts?

The rear u-joint near the bell housing is a different story. U-joint doesn"t look serviceable at all and it"s welded onto the horizontal shaft coming from the front u-joint. I"ve found replacement u-joints shown in the picture above, although not specifically called out for use on a SC, but rather for H, M, Super M, 300, 350, 400, 450, 7/8" shaft diameter matches. But it appears I would have to have the old one cut-off and the new one cut and welded on in same location. Is this the only way to fix these?

thanks

Both u-joints on my Super C are fastened with the two friction pins shown in your picture. Sounds like someone may have welded yours after the fact.

The local IH dealer had the U-joints a couple years ago.

It does not matter that the yoke is welded to the shaft. They still come apart like the U-joints in a car driveshaft. The ears on the yokes are pretty light compared to a driveshaft and it is fairly easy to bend them.

dpski,

The front U joint is factory stock and is repairable.

The rear joint is Not repairable and IS NOT factory stock. Notice the bead of weld. Someone cut off part of the original yoke and welded a junk U joint to it.

That shaft is supposed to have a yoke like on the front at both ends. I would suggest a trip to the salvage yard for a shaft complete with both yokes and the matching yoke to go on the rear shaft. Two new crosses and yer good for another 60 years.

I changed one on a Super C back in the mid 70's. I bought it from our local IH dealer. It came with a grease fitting. The old joint didn't have that. We said it was eaten up with grease. Sure made a difference in the steering. Hal

Tractorman is correct. I replace the steering Ujoints on my 240 last year, and the configuation is identical. In fact my steering had 3 Ujoints, but that"s because there was a third joint under the PS unit. All the factory joints were rebuildable but your rear joint is not factory. As your photo shows the arms are solid, and can not be pressed out. If your Ujoints are worn, replacing the arms take much of the slack out of the steering.

Thanks for the info. Local IH dealer and I rummaged through his old parts trailers and found a NOS horizontal shaft with complete with rear u-joint and yokes. New spider for the front and the front yoke from the old shaft and I"m back in business.
