Farmall BN, Starter

Just wondering if anyone knows of a different
starter that will bolt up to a Famall BN? I'd like
to find one that has a solenoid to pull the drive
into the ring gear. If not I guess I'll just
replace the drive on this starter.

I rebuilt this BN from the ground up in 1986 and
mow five or more acres of lawn each week with a
Woods L306 72 inch mower. It's not a pretty as
when I finished it back in 86 but always starts
when the starter works! 6 to 12 volt conversion
done a couple years before the rebuild.

There are two solutions to try out. The first is a new style drive pinion. It is very different than the old device and uses a clutch in the gear and as much smaller spring. IH or other suppliers have them. Replace the brushes and bushings at the same time. The second is to use a three terminal starter relay to engage the starter. A stud will need to be placed in the position of the old external terminal to allow a bolted on connection in place of the switch system. Jim

Jim,

Any chance you have a part number for this new style drive pinion? Or maybe a link to a picture so I can see if the one I have is already the new style?

My starter is a Delco Remy 1107021

There are pics in parts and pieces I think, but the new part has a thin spring and a one way clutch at the pinion. the old style has a much fatter spiral return spring. Jim

All the solenoid will do is energize the starter and thats what your switch does now. You have the original starter and there is nothing wrong with them they work in all kinds of weqther just need to be in good repair. All of mine still have the original type bendix dont see any need to change. What is supposed to make the clutch type better. There isnat any valid reason to change to 12v unless you want to wear out things faster as 6v will start them anytime. Seems like instead of fixing things rite just spend more money and go to 12v i guess its hard to get new 1ga cables and have a starter refreshed. 12v seems to sure make replacing Bendix and ring gears a regular repair.

Okay, That's what I needed to see, if I can't source one local I'll see about ordering one from that site.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Ken

Jim,

Thanks for the info on the starter "Bendix" I got the one from the link you sent. Put it in this afternoon and seems to work fine. Just need to wait 10 years to be sure it's better but does look to be made well.

Thanks again,

Ken
