Farmall H 6 volt battery

When I bought my H it had an 8 volt battery in it and I was told by the seller that it was an 8 volt system. It ran fine then it seemed like I couldnt keep a charge. I had the generator rebuilt and the Voltage Reg checked. Both showed to be working fine. Bought a new 8 volt and it lastest a few months. Talked to some guys who all said they were running 6 volt batteries so I went and bought a 6 volt about 3 weeks ago. It started flawlessly until yesterday. I've got a brand new battery and a rebuilt genny, where should I turn to next? My ammenter is barely moving when I run the tractor at 3/4 throttle, but the lights sure do take it down when I turn those on. Any help is greatly appreciated! I cant keep throwin money away on batteries!! Thanks in advance!

Chris - Your ammeter is showing the generator is not charging the battery. (If it was charging properly, immediately after startup the ammeter would show 15 - 20 amps on the "charge" side with the engine at governed RPM).

To locate the source of the problem punch on the link and work thru the flow chart.

Good luck!
generator troubleshooting

Tom, I did not polarize the generator, I have heard of this but am unsure how it is done. All I did was put the genny on and hook it up and away i went. Can you shed some light on this procedure? Thanks!

With the battery connected and the engine shut down, use a short wire wire scrap to temporarily connect the GEN and BAT terminals on the regulator. As soon as the jumper makes contact - you may see a small spark - you have successfully polarized the generator.

I followed the polarizing procedure, however with the engine shut down I got a spark but when I started the tractor I was still reading zero. So I decided to jump it with the engine running and when I did the ammeter jumped to 10 on the charging side at 3/4 throttle. I left the tractor run for about 25 minutes so hopefully I will see some results. Thanks for your help, if you have any other helpfull tips I would apreciate them!

Chris - That sounds like a bad voltage regulator - specifically the cutout relay inside the VR.

My advice is to install a new regulator

I think you will find the shunt coil on the cutout relay has been burned out because of the 8 volt battery.Jumping the cut out with the engine causes the heavy series coil to close the cut out points. When you shut the engine down the generator wont charge again. The shunt coil closes the cutout points as soon as the generator starts charging. The shunt coil is wound under the heavy series coil so repair is impossible.
