H charging problem?

Thanks guys for helping with the past problems! I"m happy to report that the noise from the engine was misadjusted valves. Sounds a lot better now!

On to my next item on the list. I had my 6v generator rebuilt on the H last year. I rewired the tractor and it charged fine last year.

Now, when running the H under load, the ammeter shows close to "0" amps. When I slow the engine down to idle, the ammeter shows anywhere between 2-8 amps charging. Then when I throttle up, the ammeter goes back towards 0 amps.

I checked all the ground wires on the VR, everything is properly wired and grounded. Seems like the VR is good because it"s working properly at idle.

Does anyone have any idea where to look next?

Happy Labor Day! If anyone is working out there, let"s hope is a labor of "love" working on your favorite tractor!

My brothers H does that. Pretty much figured that the regulator sensed that the batt was nearly up to full charge & tapered off to minimum charge. When slowed down, it charged more because of lower RPM.

I agree with Brownie.
Do check the Gen belt for tension, but the most important thing is battery state of charge. Charge voltage at 2/3 throttle should be 7 to 7.3 volts. if it is in the 6.5 area, it is low. It is normal for a good regulator to keep from overcharging. Jim

The main fan belt is intended to be run pretty loose. When pushing on it with your thumb as hard as you can, an inch and a quarter deflection is about right. If it is tighter it will take out the fan/WP bearings. Jim

Thanks for the help gentlemen!

I'll check the voltage next time I start her up. The generator belt is loose and is similar to what Jim is saying deflection wise.

I guess the VR is just doing it's job then and charging when needed. I'm not having any starting problems but I thought it was just weird that the VR would charge at a lower RPM than at full throttle.

Happy Labor Day!
