Water pump on H.

I was told to be careful of the felt seal in the waterpump housing of an H. Was cleaning things up today and messed it up a bit. I messed the ridge that presses against the generator pulley. I haven't talked to my parts man yet - but I'm guessing the thing can't be replaced. What do you all think? Does much fluid actually flow back down around the sleeve? Or does this 'seal' simply cushion the generator pulley a bit and prevent wear in that way? Or does it seal the entire front face of the housing - if so, hopefully this little ridge won't influence its ability to hold fluid back. By the way ... if The Man should read this - thanks for walking me through the waterpump deconstruction. Dave

It is to keep casual material out of the shaft area, Ignore it unless it is destroyed. Then ignore it unless you are working the tractor in ropy material, then (ignore it) Jim

Great. Thanks for putting my mind at rest. Now I can put the thing back together. Maybe you can also let me know if I only need to repack the very end of the sleeve where it widens about the shaft? I'm assuming so since the shaft fits pretty tightly for most of the length of the sleeve. Finally ... in the middle of the fan hub there's lots of room between the bushing that slides over the sleeve and the inner walls of the hub. When I took the thing apart there was nothing in this space. Should that be packed with greese when I reassemble? Thanks.

There should be a grease fitting (usually with a screw on cover) on the hub If this attaches to the Vid space, I think it could be packed with grease (I like mobil1 synthetic chassis grease). I cannot remember exactly where the void is. The packing goes only in the flaired ares. behind the packing nut. Tighten the nut pretty hard (enough to make it turn hard enough to not spin after it is spun by hand) then back it off a little, 1/6th of a turn, and assemble. If it leaks tighten it until the leak stops, not more. check it once in a while, it will be fine after one or two retightenings. Don't over tighten it will get hot. Jim
