Have a 1945 AV and was wondering about the brakes. Going forward it stops fine. Going backwards is a different story. Have a lot of hills here and it is scary sometimes backing down a grade. No fluid on bands, just seems like they do not work very good backwards, most times using both feet and a prayer to stop! Looked at them many times and need to know what I am missing. If I know I'll be in a situation like that anymore I just use another machine. Thanks in advance, Allan.

Those band type brakes are more or less self energizing going forwards. Just look at the way the band wraps around the drum, forward motion of tractor tends to pull the band tighter. Going backwards the motion of the tractor is working against the pull on the band by the brake linkage causing it to grip the drum looser.
