Farmall 240 live hyd problem

I bought a 1958 240 that the fast hitch raise/lower is reversed. I tried to reverse the hoses on the cylinder and it won"t do anything then. With the hoses in the original positions when you push the raise/lower lever forward the hitch raises up and when you pull back it lowers. Is it possible there could be something reversed in the pump? I don"t have a shop manual or any diagrams. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't have a 240, but there is probably a check valve in one of the lines that prevent it from dropping with the engine off. Other tractors are the same way -- JD 4020 3 point for one. It is confusing.

Never had a 240 but most tractors IH made around that time raised when the lever was pushed forward. Also probably has a check valve in the system to keep the hydraulics from settling due to leakage through the control valve. Thats probably the reason for not working correct when the hoses are reversed.
