Smoke from the bell housing on W6

Dad and I went to look at a W6 this morning.

Even though the price was right, we passed on it primarily because there was a small amount of EXHAUST smoke coming from every crack and crevice in the bell housing, including the starter!

It was definitely exhaust smoke from the smell.

Why would exhaust smoke be coming out of the bell housing?

Unless there some sort of farmerized exaust system on thej tractor, theres no way I can see exaust coming from the bell housing area. it would haveto be the clutch or throw out bearing or something there.

as john says, cant be. has be be clutch or brg. did you drive the tractor? possibly a smoked starter?

What I know about a W6 is...well...I couldn't pick one out of a line up. Having said that is it not possible that the rear seal is shot (read gone) and there are blowby fumes in the crank case that might be leaking out that way? Pure speculation but...

I'm with PUTTER - sounds like old mouse nest, chipmunk's winter seed stash or similar is burning from friction against the flywheel/clutch.

No way I know exhaust can leak into the bellhousing on a W6...

I'm with the mouse nest theory. Not available from the factory, only as a field installation. IH part#642539R1.

Texters will grasp my meaning.

The only opening from the motor to the bell would be a completely blown out rear main seal. If the smoke smells hot and "exhausty" I rather suspect the remains of a mouse nest that has absorbed oil from a seep from the rear main being caught up in the works enough to heat up.

Nope, it's definitely exhaust.

It smelled like sucking on a tailpipe. Not like burning clutch. Not like burning rat dookie.

My W9 has a plate on the left upper side of bell housing. Can you take it off, if a w6 has one, while it is running?

it's probably oil seeping from the rear main being burned up by the clutch? for blowby to be pushed out thru a worn rear main seal i would think you would have such a bad oil leak that it would be pouring out, and if blow by was pushing it's way out thru the trani you sure as hell would be seeing it when you take the oil filler cap off too. it's gotta be something being burned by the clutch which would be oil giving it something of an exhaust smell.

"Nope, it's definitely exhaust. It smelled like sucking on a tailpipe. Not like burning clutch. Not like burning rat dookie."

IH did steal/borrow a patent from Essex that used exaust gases to heat up the gear oil to help it flow much better to the gears, so if the tube that came from the exaust manifold to the trans case had a leak, then youd smell exaust from that area. ;)

If there were a chunk out of the head where an exhaust passage is adjacent to the Valve cover, and if the rear main, (or a welch plug to the crankcase is rusted out) it would do that. Opening the oil fill hole will surely be clear evidence. Jim
