International 330U won't start

Battery is fully charged; I hear a click at the starter solenoid when I press the starter switch, but nothing happens. I have cleaned all of the connections, but didn"t help. Last time this happened I left it alone for a day, went back and it took right off when I pressed the starter switch. This is a 6 volt system. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this problem?

It may be your solenoid. Set the brakes and make sure the tractor is out of gear and then short across the solenoid terminals using a screwdriver. With your ignition switch in the on position the engine should start when you do that. Hal

if you hear the soloniod click your starter is stuck or just seized up and needs to be replaced. just for the heck of it make sure you can turn the engine by hand at the crank pulley, also wack the starter with a hammer and see if that helps, and once again if that helps you need a starter...

Shorted across the solenoid terminals; heard the click, but nothing. A couple of times when I tried this the starter budged a bit, but didn"t spin. Can a battery show full charge, but not have enough power to crank the engine?

I would check the started to make sure it isn't stuck. The bendix drive may be jammed into the ring gear and hasn't retracked. Hal

Use a volt meter and measure the battery voltage at your starter when trying to start the engine. You will need a helper when doing this.
Since its a 6 volt system you need 00 battery cables and no longer than necessary. Can you hand crank the engine? Hal

I agree with Hal. My "M" does this on occasion, and I need to get underneath and turn the ring gear with a large screwdriver or prybar to get the Bendix to retract (my handcrank is stuck from years of neglect). I'm thinking for mine that a little grease on the gear may help.

I have a 300U. If it stalls out in gear, the engine will 'stick'. Probably a rust spot in one of the cylinders. I pull the starter, turn the flywheel with a screw driver, put the starter back in and starts right up. Takes about 15 minutes.

Thanks to all who offered advice. Took the starter to a rebuild shop and they replaced the solenoid, said the starter was fine. Tractor started right up with the new solenoid.
