Charging Problem Farmall 200

I have charging problem on a 200 that I restored. A voltage reading taken at the battery constantly fluctuates to the point I can’t get a reading. I have checked the generator and the tractor has new wiring. The voltage regulator has been changed twice. Help! Thanks for your time!

Those systems generate a lot of electrical noise. My guess is you are using a cheap digital meter that lacks good noise filters. Find a cheap ANALOG meter (if you can), or a higher quality digital meter and see what your readings are.

Jim's comment is spot on. digital meters need to be professional grade (100+ dollars) to be accurate. Jim

Thanks, my charge indicator is in the neg when the engine is running. I'm using a fluke 77 meter $140 in it's day.

I believe it is probably not charging. An analog meter from radio shack will be stable. Even the spark voltage will fake out the meter. Fluke is good, Analog cheap will do the job. Jim

good meter but way too sensitive
go analog or use a resistor
don't remember what value but it will load up and steady out the meter reading

Your Fluke 77 is a good meter and is not affected by generator/regulator electrical noise (it's what I use for old tractor electrics...)

But instead of watching the digital display use the bar graph at the bottom of the display. It is easier to interpret than rapidly changing digital display. Or as other suggest pick up an analog meter. Older ones like Simpson and Triplett are best and can be purchased cheap on Ebay, etc.

As to your "no charge" problem the cause could be a poor ground at the regulator, high resistance in the wiring harness between the generator and regulator, a weak generator (bad brushes, etc) or a bad regulator. FWIW the the last two new regulators I've purchased needed to be "tweaked" before they would operate properly...

Thanks for all the input! I tested the generator by only connecting to the battery, the unit would turn. Also shorted terminal "F" to ground and checked the voltage on terminal "A" with the tactor running and got about 15 volts. All looked good until I took the generator apart, the wire that goes from one of the brushes to terminal "A" had some of the coating off and touching the case. Fixed the wire and the tractor is charging correct with an output of 6.9 volts on a charged battery.
Thanks for the excellent info!
