SC - seat shock "barbell"

I took the shock off my seat to visit the local autoparts store to see if they have some universal rubber bushings for it.

Everything unbolted fine but I am a little stymied by the "barbell" spacer that goes through the eyelet on the top. There is no way it will slide out through the eyelet so it has to come apart - question is how?

I have soaked it a time or two with some lube - any ideas on easiest way to disassemble this thing? Shock still works fine so not really interested in replacing - besides - I am too cheap as well...too much German/Czech blood in the system.

Thanks ahead.

Not sure if I'm thinking of the same part, but if it's that rubber bushing with a bolt coming in from each side of the seat mount . . .

I was ugly enough by the time I got it out that I never took it apart to see what it was made of -- whether a single piece in the middle threaded to take the bolt from each end, or two separate threaded parts embedded in the rubber. In any event, it's the rubber that has rotted/given out around the threads internal to it that are making your problem. Turning on the bolt head results in merely turning the whole rig around inside the rubber without ever acting on the threads.

If we're talking about the same thing and you're having the same problem, my solution was to grind off the old bolt heads and a judicious application of a prybar to free it all up to get it out of the way, and replace with new.

It's not anything you'll ever have to take apart again in your lifetime, but a sparing touch of an anti-seize compound on the threads in the replacement might be a good gesture toward the next guy.

There is a 1/2" fine thread bolt that comes in from each side. I had a heck of a time getting it out on my C. A lot of patience and an impact wrench finally did the trick. If I remember right I got one side loose, tightened it back up to get the other side loose. Then was able to remove the shock. The rubber bushings were a problem and in the way. They were available through Case/IH.

The rubber shock absorber bushing simply slide onto that spacer. Most likely the spacer has rusted and corroded to the point that the bushings are now bonded to it, but they will come loose if you are determined enough, and this can be accomplished without damaging the shock absorber. Ues a hammer and large punch or even a discarded bolt as a punch and get rough with it. It will come apart.
