966 vs 1066

how can you tell the difference between the two ? have a new puller in the club and we believe its a 966 that if memory serve's me they didn;t come with turbo's , but it has 1066 sheet metal, turbo and its in the 8500 lb class , serial numbers were ground off the motor which looks like a truck motor , so i am trying to figure out how to tell wjat we have here-been told by another member he was bounced out of two different clubs , they claim it had a 966 tag on the block but i checked that but noe it reads 1066 but we all know hoe easy it is to make a tag up , please get back to me , thanks

Could be kind of hard if he is bent on covering things up. The 966 had 12 inch clutch but could easily be changed to 14. The 9 had cat two three point hitch and 10 had cat three but there again if he has all that off the both had same rear frames. Internally, the 10 has wider bull gears and bull pinions, different bearing, and bearing end cap on outer axle. It may have a part number on it you could see from outside. Axles are different but same external size. Almost forgot, different fuel tanks, easily recognized , wouldn't think he would change them.

How do you get a 9 or 1066 in a 8500lb class? Those trctors weight more than 10000 lbs. I have a 766 and am thinking of pulling it next year. Thanks Kent

I KNOW BUT ITS IN THE 8500 LB CLASS , I DON'T CARE . ITS ALOT OF PEOPLE ARE BITCHING , HE'S BEATING EVERYONE BY A MILE AND MAKING EVERYONE ELSE LOOK LIKE CHUMPS , I THINK ITS A HOT STOCK TRACTOR MYSELF , I THOUGHT 966'S WEREN'T TURBO CHARGED AND 1066'S WERE , BUT I'M NOT SURE

You are right, the 966 did NOT come from the factory with a turbo. The 1066 did come from the factory with a turbo.

THATS WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT , WE THINK HE TOOK A 966 AND PUT 1066 SHEET METAL , TURBO , AND DID WHAT EVER HE HAD TO DO TO GET IT TO 8500 LB CLASS , KUST TRYING TO KEEP IT FAIR , EVERYONE PLAYS A LITTLE BUT WHEN ITS ALOT AND ITS REALLY STANDS OUT , THEN YOU HAVE A PROBLEM , BEEN SAID HE WAS BOUNCED OUT OF TWO OTHERS CLUBS

but it has 1066 sheet metal, turbo and its in the 8500 lb class , serial numbers were ground off the motor which looks like a truck motor

Easy, you make him prove it is a 1066 instead of you guys trying to prove its a 966. Then you tell him is ground off serial numbers only work when selling stolen property.

There's nothing but the owner's self-control stopping them from bolting any number of non-966 parts on to a 966. It all goes back to Eli Whitney and the concept of interchangeable parts.

So he ground off the serial number... So what? Even if the number was still there he could have done ANYTHING to the internals of that engine, and there's no way to tell without tearing down the engine.

This is going to boil down to your club's rules, and how you enforce them.

If your rules state "factory equipment" and he's claiming it's a 966, then the turbo is out.

Do you have a rule where the tractor can make no more than ???% of the factory-rated HP? Put it on the dyno after one of his "beat everyone by a mile" pulls. Don't let him get off the seat.

Other than a few internal things, 3 pt, and turbo, there are no real differences in the 9 and 10 66's, weight-wise. The castings are all shared.

I know when my friend was pulling the 9's and 10's only came down into the 9500, and were being beaten by a deere 60 regularly. I'd say it's definitely gutted to get down to 8500.

I think the sheetmetal is even the same from the 7 and up. He could have a DT466 crank in it, maybe even a DT530 crank. The 414, 436, and 466 share a common block, swap the crank for more inches, I think maybe the 1066 we farmed with had a 466 crank in it. The re-man engine we put in the 1566 (DT436) had a 414 block.

The only real thing I could think of to keep him out of the lighter class is to require a working PTO and that all gears function.
