can any of you guys tell me where to start to get some of the play out of the steering on a 1960 model farmall 560 i have replaced the u-joints. i cant tell from the parts diaghram if it has replaceable worm gears or what

Either power, or manual steering has the primary guts of the system in the bolster. Both have a ball worm and rack that is engaged to the main pivot shaft (bolts to lower bolster with the wheels on a narrow front).
If there is lost motion in that assembly you will need to find a good replacement (possibly including the main shaft. Shopping for a complete bolster that is good might be easier in the long run, and shipping would be the only reason to avoid that option. Jim

How are the splines on the shaft going into worm, they are a high wear item and then you are in for mighty expensive shaft or (jury rigging). I have cut that sliding joint and welded washers onto it so you can clamp it down tight. Then you need to position steering shaft all the way from steering wheel so it can move back and forth so shaft at worm can travel in an out to shift spool. Other thing that happens a lot is there is an allen head set screw inside worm assembly that comes loose and allows a lot of play. Also, I have added balls into the worm to take up for wear. There are two different sizes of balls, you alternate between the dark smaller ones and polished larger ones to get a good tight fit that is still free. Oh, yes, one can spend a good deal of time in there and it may just be plum worn out all through it. Lash is also adjustable between piston and rack by turning the excentric sleeve assembly.

thanks guys this ole tractor need a lot of work yet but ill get'er done sooner or later. It had about 3/4 turn of play I replaced the u-joints and have it down to a little less than a 1/2 turn which aint that too bad but it wonders pretty bad you are constanly fighting the wheel to keep on your side of the road it goes left you pull it right then have to pull it back left and so on for the lack of better words it wont "center" itself

many thanks
