OT: IH 990 Mower Conditioner

Can anyone tell me if there were problems with the IH 990 mower conditioner? When were they built? I am sure the 1190 was better but I don't want to spend that much. I only have about 10 acres a year to cut. I have tried using a sickle mower but in twisted hay it doesn't work that well.

Then you are doing something wrong with the sickle bar...but I sense you feel the need for a mower conditioner to do ten acres, soooo....

When I was looking at getting one it was my machine of choice because it is (1)IH and (2) people said great things about them. Not everyone but a lot. Some of the newer NH machines can be expensive to maintain and I did not see the need for my small hayfield.

I had a 990 for several years and it was a good machine. The best thing I ever did for it was put new guards and hold-downs on. It gave very good service and would even mow waist-high fescue.

I also put a heavy-duty chain on that ran the rollers, I had less trouble with it after that. If I was going to buy another one I would check the condition of the cast iron sprocket that runs this same chain that goes to the roller drives. It was over $200 several years ago. Make sure the chain runs straight also, I had to move my rolers to get this drive chain to run true so it would stay on.

I"ve heard that the 990 was a more reliable machine than the 1190, but I can"t say from experience. Good luck, I like the 990.

I use one have not had any problems. Look at the frame there by the cylinder i have one that the frame is broken there. Other than that you can mow anything with them sudan taller than the tractor. Down tangled alfalfa you name it. First one i gave $500.00 the next was $75.00.
