Hydraulic pump 400

Buddy has 400 that he left the hydraulic lever engaged for about thirty minutes while driving down the road. Now leaks aparantly engine oil into the tack drive. Whats the fix? Hows the engine oil get through the hydraulic pump? Pump got hot enough to burn your hand. Any suggestions appreciated. Bernie Steffen

Just remove the pump and replace the seal, it is either a lip seal or a "O" ring. If the shaft is worn, a speedy sleeve may be needed. For an "O" ring the housing will need to be machined a little larger to allow for the sleeve. Jim

Janicholson Did you notice I said engine oil in tach cable? I looked at the part diagrahm and I Say no way it can be engine oil. Dunno may be wrong have before. Thanks for reply Bernie Steffen

To the best of my knowledge, there is no engine oil in the drive, nor in the distributor. If Hytran is heated and mixed with grease it could resemble engine oil. Do a spot test on clean paper using engine oil from the dip stick, and a drop of that speedo lubricant that is messing things up. Jim

How can you tell the difference between dirty hytran and dirty engine oil with just a calibrated eyeball?

It's hytran, definitely. That's the only thing that could be entering the distributor from the hydraulic pump.

If it got hot enough, it may be that the grease in the adapter housing liquified allowing the lighter oils to enter the distributor.
