Farmall H Rear Wheel Bolts

I am looking for the 5/8"x4 1/4" square head bolts for my H. I cannot reuse my old ones they are in bad shape. Anyone know where I can buy these? Thank You.

I got mine from my local Case-IH dealer. They are hex head instead of square, but they work just fine, and there is plenty of room for a wrench.

what do you mean "bad shape"?unless they are badli pitted or bent, wire wheel them and chase the threads, they should be just fine

Fastenal and others will have them. I don't know about the length, though. You will probably have to settle for 4 or 4.5. Like Rusty, I just use hex head. Not original, but I also use cadmium plated, to me they look better than painting them.

I thought at one time those bolts would be a common, hardware store item, but I quickly learned they are not. The hardware store 4" bolts are too short, and the 5" bolts are not threaded far enough up on the shank. I even tried to find them at my local N.A.P.A., but they didn't carry the 4.5" length either, so I went to the Case-IH dealer. Apparently they are somewhat of a specialty bolt, but any farm implement dealer should have them.

Bad shape as in the bolts are like 1/4" wide in spots and thread is gone on some, not sure how but they are. Sounds like I will not be finding square heads. I did find the right size I want through Fastenal but there again hex head I will just go with those. Originally the bolts were painted red correct? Thanks again.

I think the original bolts most likely had a black oxide finish, and since the rims were not installed until after the tractor recieved its original coat of paint, it would be my guess that those bolts did NOT get painted until the tractors FIRST repaint. In any event, only the heads of the bolts would ever be red.

At the 2009 RPRU in Madison, Wisconsin I bought a few items from Norman Jackson from Greenfield, Indiana (Phone 317-431-4803) some of which were square head bolts. I picked up one of his price lists along with his contact information and see he lists 5/8" X 4 1/2" square head bolts at $3.50 each. His price list sheet notes he specializes in square head bolts among other things. You might give him a try if you want to stay with the original appearance bolts, Hal.

You might have to go 4-1/2", but try Earnest Machine. Their online stuff is in lots of 25, but they've been happy to sell small lots to me in the past. Theya also have stock that is not listed on line. Google them up and have alook around. It'd be worth a call anyway.

These are the ones that hold the rim on? I don't remember the length of mine, but I just went to a farm store and bought them. They are neither too long or short, at least they look ok to me. As you know a lot of the original bolts are sort of an oddball length. Perhaps those lengths were more common when the tractor was built.
