working on my new/old belly mower on my new/ old 1949 cub , the manuel for the mower [ found online] says to tighten the idler pulleys until the belt is snug, but when the mower is lifted there should be no tension on the pto drive pulley, i got what i thought was snug, mowed 400 feet and threw the belt off, but man does it mow nice! as well as dropped 2 cylinders on the engine, dont know what thats about yet, although that was the first work the cub has done since ive had it other than pull a old pickup trailer around, but the question is just how tight should the drive belt be?

Most things I see talking about how tight a belt should be says you should be able to push or pull the belt a 1/2 inch. Don't know it that would work on that but most belts say 1/2 inch on most equipment I have worked on

For most belts I tighten them so they have 1/4" - 1/2" delection in the middle of the belt at 45# load torque. However, there are some belts that don"t require that much tension & others that have to be "g-string tight". Best to get a manual & see what it recomends.

If it's a Woods mower, the belt needs to be as tight as you can get it. Don't know about other brands.
