The starter on my H hangs up once in a while 1 in 10 times. I get out and hand crank it a turn and it starts alright. I had the starter rebuilt and replaced the ring gear and it still hangs up.Any ideas. thanks greg

Happens once in a while on our H. We rock it back and forth a couple times, and usually takes care of the problem.

Don't feel bad, mine does it too. I did all you did . I usually take a 3/4 " wrench and loosen the starter and jiggle it till I hear it let loose and its OK . Just the nature of the beast.

Greg - Did the rebuilder install a new the starter drive ("bendix") when he rebuilt the starter?

A worn starter drive pinion can be prone to jamming when mated to a new, unworn ring gear...

Either the ring gear on the fly-wheel is worn, or the bendix is hanging. Try graphite power on the bendix, and look at the condition of the teeth on the fly-wheel ring gear while you have the starter out.

I see reading comprehension is not on the menu this morning...

He said he installed a NEW ring gear.

I'm with Bob M... A "rebuilt" starter only has the parts that *look* bad replaced. If he didn't replace the bendix (hopefully with the new clutch style), that is probably where your problem is.

Thats why we always carried the crank on the H and Super A. I don"t remember tha A ever locking but the H did. Just use the crank and bump it and it will turn lose.

If you can turn it over with hand crank bendix is not hung up on ring gear. The only ways to unlock bendix is to put tractor in 5th gear and rock it back and forth (works sometimes) or loosen starter bolts (works every time).

Yes, I've done that a couple of times. You don't need to turn the engine very much at all. Like you said, just bump it.
