Wondering what you red blooded guys have to say about the 1256 and the 1456 Farmall. I would be buying one to use on the farm not in a parade. One of it's specific jobs would be running the blower at the silo, where the more power the merrier! There is not much info on the 1456 at tractor data so any tech. info would be welcome. I do need 540 PTO so would be looking for one with both shafts. I've always been a green blooded sort so any particular things to look for with these two? Cautionary notes about them in general? Our neighbor had a 1206 when I was growing up and I've had a soft spot for them ever since.

You'll find both the 1256 and 1456 have great power and lugging abilities. They both are very reliable tractors, which is something you probably not used to. LOL

My grandpa had a 1256 when I was growing up. That thing was a brute. Pure power machine! I loved it, and if I would have been older at the time of auction, I would have bought it. Awesome tractor.

Good tractors!I have a 1256-love it!lot af power, reliable.Remember, alot of those older high horsepower tractors havehad the dogsnot pulled outof them, they still have a lot of life in them.My tractor has 20,000 hrs, been o'hauled once....or twice, has new TA and clutch, but it is an everyday user--my big horse--will be for a long time yet

Maybe from the factory, but many farmers swapped out the 1000-only PTO for the 540/1000 dual-shaft unit.

Odds are pretty good if you find one it will have both shafts.

I asked this question before,anybody ever run a 1206 and a1256,....sideby side?how did they compare?power /fuel economy? just curiuos.

OK, that's why I'm seeing pictures of thier tails on tractor house showing both shafts. Thanks for all the feedback. I know I am letting myself in for a lot of kidding if I do this but at this point, the way the world and this country are going I think I love the good old American rolling iron more than red or green paint. I don't know about any one else but I don't need a satelite hook up to find my way around my farm. Anyway, thanks again for the replies. If anyone does have an opinion on the 1206 vs 1256 question I would love to hear it.

They appear to be very similiar, differences were in engine still a DT407, but had bigger wrist pins & spline drive inj pump, had a larger radiator that was about 2" set further ahead, longer hose, side panels, Wide front was angled pins & clamps for adj width, square welded on tube stabilizer under engine pan. In rear frame was bigger bull gears, brakes & pinions, with 3.5" axles. Filters all the same, air , hyd, engine, fuel. I used to set them up & deliver to customer, big horse, usually had 20.8 rear tires.
2 of them were gold demos.

I forget to add about the Ipto, most were delivered with dual speed, way around it was delete when ordered from Farmall at Rock Island the standard single and order Field Completing Attachment ( as IH termed it)for a 856 dual speed, we ended up with a lot Ipto blank cover plates left, still did this into 66/86 series also.
