I have a 1967 farmall 140 and we have clutch engagement problems. When the clutch is let out there is no area to ride it. The clutch always works like you are popping it even though we are trying to ride it. All clutch adjustments have been performed to the tractor as per the IH service manual. Also to add, the tractor has always done it since new, since we have own it.
Is this a 140 problem? because my neighbours 140 also has this problem. Could anyone help us out?

Tractor clutches have little cushion for feel built into them (some more than others). These tractors tend to be grabby in action, and as a result feel bad when hitching or trying to inch around things. A different friction disk with good cushion spring distance (ability to compress as pressure is put on them) might do the trick. These are the wavy metal stampings between the friction surfaces where the rivets are. If it isn't broken, fixing needs to be a decision you make. If it has a ceramic, or semi metallic "puck" style clutch, they are much more grabby, as they have little or no cushion. I hope this helps. Jim

Just curious--is there a J at the end of the serial number (meaning Rockford clutch)? My 1966 140 with (original) Rockford clutch is a little grabby, especially starting out, but works pretty well after a few minutes of use.
