1967 Farmall 656 diesel

I purchased a 1967 656 diesel and have a few questions i could use some help with answers.
First, What is the differences between the 656 and the 656 Hydro?
Second, Does the TA just reduce ground speed or does it actually change gearing.
Third, The old tractor has a loader with a trip bucket. It kinda resembles a 1701 in appearance but I cannot find any identfying info on the loader other than it is the same color red as tractor. Any ideas on what it might?
Lastly, Do most owners purchase the cat II arms and top link or do they do a more extensive conversion to 3pt.
I hope these questions are not to elementary but this is my first trip to the world of Farmall.

656 gear is a 5 speed with a TA,656 hydro has a hydrostatic transmission.(same tractor, just different trannys)The TA is apower shifted gear-30%decrease in speed;about the same % increase in power/pulling ability.the loader could be ANY aftermarket brand, anybobys guess-pictures?the adapter 'prongs are the cheape4st and most common "fix. The best(and most expensive)would be to find a complete factory 3pt from a junker in a salvage yard.

Thanks for your reply.
I guess I dont really understand how they get the lower gearing but I suppose it is the same principal as the old Massey Multipower.
I was interested in the mfg of the loader in the event there was a set of hay stabbers available for it.
Thanks again
John

One thing to remember - the TA only decreases speed under load. If you are going down hill and pull back the TA it will free wheel and actually increase in speed. Free wheeling is also very hard on the TA.

The TA in a 656 works like a 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission, except that it's shifted manually by a lever.

In an oversimplified nutshell:

The TA unit sits in between the engine and the transmission so it has an effect on all gears.

There is a clutch and a planetary gearbox inside the 656's TA. The TA lever engages and disengages the clutch.

When the clutch is engaged (TA lever ahead), it locks the planetary gearbox and spins it as a unit. The gearbox acts as a solid shaft and gives you DIRECT drive to the transmission.

Pull the TA lever back, and the clutch disengages. Now the planetary gearbox goes to work and reduces the RPMs from the engine to the transmission. This gives reduced speed, but multiplies the torque from the engine.
