Removing paint from serial number plate

Hello. I just got a 1945 Farmall A and the serial number plate is painted over. My question is how do I get the paint off the tag without destoying it and whats under it. ThANKS

I would try a gray scotch brite pad ang some thinner to try and brake the surface of the paint then a rag and thinner. If the tag is still messed up you can always get a replacement with the rivit's from Stiner's tractor parts. But you will have to stamp all your number's in yourself. Hope's this helps.

Paint some Acetone with a small brush that will remove the Red paint and leave the orogonal black on the plate. Using a schotch brite will also remove the orogonal black at least thats what happenen to me but i have had good luck with the Acetone. Mite just want to get a new one and have them stamp it for you.

I don't think an original 1945 serial number plate would have had any paint or printing. The numbers and letters are all stamped in, so a can of aerosol carb cleaner and some grade 4 steel wool should take care of it.

Just to follow up on Gene and others, all the ideas for stripping will work just go slow and easy. As fara as the black, it's recesses in '45. On my '47, I cleaned it up with a Scotchbrite. After taping over the flat spots where the numbers get stamped, I hit it with several thin coats of black acrylic lacquer, then wet-sanded down with 1600 or 2000 grit. Had to to go back over it several times to get it right before a final coat of a clear lacquer, but the International Harvester and other printing on there is actually lightly stamped so that it is raised above the black background.
