Farmall M Tractor

I am looking at a reconditioned 1948 Farmall M. The tractor seems to idle at a high rpm. All 5 gears seem to operate correctly. However, there is no difference in the ground speed of the tractor between 2nd gear, 3rd gear, 4th gear and 5th gear when the throttle is moved to full rpm. I know 5th gear is supposed to be the road gear but the tractor moves like it is in 2nd gear. Any thoughts as to what might be the problem? Thanks.

By reconditioned, I suppose that means painted from 10 feet away -- better look for another tractor. Or have the "reconditioner" pull the trans cover and fix it. Usually when it doesn't shift properly, the problem can be fixed by removing the gearshift lever, and possibly the belt pulley and lining the shift rails up. This one sounds like more of a problem. The carb has easy to adjust idle speed and mixture controls -- in this case it sounds like the rod from the tang on the carb to the rod going to the governor is not connected properly.

The words "reconditioned" or "restored" always raise a red flag for me. I have seen way too many "restored" tractors that had nothing more than a coat of new paint, and very poorly applied with very little prep work.

If it also goes forward in neutral, the trans is stuck in 2 and the shifter is not working. There could be major issues if the repair of the lever, and alignment of the shift rails through the lever hole does not fix it.. Jim
