No throttle control on my M

When I fire up my 46' M The RPMs go way up and stay there. You can move the lever back and forth but nothing changes. I cant get it to idle. This is my first tractor so im running blind. Any ideas? Thanks

Has the carburator been off lately - there is a connection from the govenors to the carb that is easy to miss and then there's no control. You can pull off the cover to the govenors and move the throttle to see if everything is connected also.

Follow the linkage. (do not run it at High RPM, it will come apart) Governed High Idle is less than 2000 Probably 1650) so if it seems way to fast it is.
From the throttle lever at the wheel, a rod goes forward and down through the hood. It is connected to a rocker lever and has springs to give feel to the lever. There is a rod from this rocker lever that moves an arm on the back of the governor. It should move this arm through its full travel.

If it is it is OK. If the arm is loose and moves with no resistance when disconnected from the rod going up, there are internal problems in the governor.

If it seems to feel spring resistance as it is moved, it is OK.

The most likely cause is a mis located tab and slot in the linkage where the carb attaches to the governor tube (top front of carb, just below the mounting flange) remove the two screws holding the tube and push it toward the governor. Look to see if the tab and slot are engaged. Probably not. Put it right (it is tricky) and all is well. Keep us posted, and do not run it at high speeds. Jim

First off sounds like you need a manual the I-T IH-8 is a good one and can be picked up at most good farm and home stores. There is 2 or 3 pages in it that tell you how to adjust the gov to the carb and if the carb has been off for any reason it needs to be done or you can run into problems like your having. Plus if it has been off I'll bet the control from the carb to gov are not lined up correctly and that will cause that problem. BTDT or should I say a friend installed the carb I had to fix his mistake

Helping a friend on his M with the same problem.
Went through all the above usual causes. Removed the cover on the gov.found the eye the control lever shaft broken on one end. Removed the govenor, half of the idler gear that runs the govenor was broked off. The engine still ran, no noise just no speed control. Can always find a new cause for no throttle control.

Yep that was it, hooked up the tab to carb. and she is idles now. took her for a ride in my subdivision. I think my nabors think im a little off, riding around on a big M. Im having a blast, Thanks again for everyones help.

Yes its fun you get lots of looks. I lived in Colo,Sp and when i took a B down to get gas stopped lots of times to visit amazing how many people drove on on the veggie farms ect. Had it at work on day shop was next to I-25 had some people stop in and take pics of the BN said he drove one in Calif as a kid. One time an old timer said the reason they called it a B was it was the best small tractor ever built.
