belt on woods mower

I have a question about my l/59 woods mower.
When I finish mowing I find the belt on the woods is twisted all up. I take it off strighten it all up and next time mowing it gets all twisted again. These belts are costly and I know i'm going to screw up another one. What do you all think, thanks....jimmy

What do you mean by "all twisted up"?

My L306 REQUIRES a 1/2 twist on the left side and a 3/4 twist on the right side or the belt will NOT stay on.

I don't know what's going on, but if that one gets totally screwed up, maybe it would be a good idea to get a custom made round belt. I had one made for a Heston swather. Made of uratheane I believe. It stood up very well.

The Woods belt is already a 5 or 6 sided belt.

here is a copy of the belt routing and adjustment for the woods l59 and l306 mowers. i discovered i need to run the woods belts on my mowers, not ones from motion industries (berry bearing ) ect. seems the belt angle is slightly different and the other belts do not last like the woods belts.

I have a Woods 59-1 that needs a many twists 90-180and a 360. On mine you need to follow the map for twists or you won't get it to work. Usually/always a belt that twists by it self will never work right no matter how many times you straighten it. Your model 1-59 I am not familiar with .

I have been running a generic belt on my L59 for about 3 years now without problems except that the belt is about 3 or 4 inches shorter than the Woods belt and that causes the mower to be too near the rear tires. I've used the mower a lot and it does not show much wear. If your belt is twisting up and turning over in the sheaves, it is not installed correctly, or it is not tight enough, or the belt is worn out. When properly installed, the belt must be very tight. I've been using this same mower for 35 years and belts typically last 4 or 5 years mowing 4 or 5 acres on a regular basis.

Thanks for info; My belt is a woods belt with four sides counting the small bottom, seamslike from what you all said and the diagram i'm doing everything correct.I think maybe I just don't get it tight enough..And I agree once the belt twists it's always gona give me trouble...

I bought my 306 12 years ago, and it was used when I got it. I have 2 acres to keep mowed, and I'm still using the original belt which shows very little wear.

Take the belt off and then turn it over so it will be running backward from what it is now that sometimes fixes the problem. Does your idler beneath the drive have a smooth pulley on the return side. Earlier ones had both pulleys grouved that made a twist in too short distance to keep the belt from running the twist. You need also to run the belt very tight. One of the largest failures of those belts is running too loose.

You need to use a pry bar or a jack to push down that idler pulley when you tighten the belt. Otherwise, you will not get it tight enough. Also always tighten be belt when the mower is in the raised position. The belt has to the TIGHT!!

Yes! as tight as you can get it and then just a little bit tighter.
