Farmall A Price

Hi, I have been lurking around watching and learning but now have a chance to buy a Farmall A that's in pretty rough shape. It is a 1940 bare bones tractor no starter, no electrical and seized engine. And the tires are bad to boot. I live in Edmonton alberta Canada. I don't want ot insult the owner but can't see giving a lot for it. Any thoughts would help greatly. Thanks

It SHOULD be $100-$200, but if he is actively seeking to sell it, he is gonna find out that it"s worth more than that for scrap...so I would plan on paying whatever it"s scrap value is in yoour area

I gave $100.00 for this A back in 1975. That included the 16-inch moldboard plow. The engine was stuck needed tires, rims, fenders, steering wheel and new wiring. It did have battery start and I bought a new battery. Hal

Depends on what you would like to achieve. If you like to spend a lot of time and money, use a lot of elbow grease, bust your knuckles, suffer from frustration, but in the end be able to proudly say that this is the tractor you restored, buy it for the least amount you can agree on with the seller. (My guess would be 250 Can. dollars max but a I have no idea of prices in your area.)
If you would just like to have a decent older tractor, look for a runner and be time and money ahead. IMHO, Hendrik.

Congratualtions on your purchase! You must feel proud.
There are tons of knowledge on this forum. Search the archives and, if you cannot find there what you need, ask questions on the forum. A set of manuals (user manual, service manual and parts book) is money well spent.
Have fun. Hendrik, proud owner of a basket case 1950 Super A.

(quoted from post at 08:37:21 09/15/10) What looks tall to you? I agree that the regular A and SA can look tall depending on how they have the rolling part configured. AV should be indicated on the tag or engine # unless they are not original but an AV will be obvious by the distinctive centers on the rears. Big disks in the center are different than what you should be used to seeing.
The A/Bs are pretty new to me bc I never cared about them until I owned one so I don't know too much yet. I do know there is definately something not stock with the rear wheels on that tractor. You can see that easily when you compare it to the other picture. The rims are TOTALLY different including pressed steel on the bottom photo.
I agree the serial number would be different if it were an AV. I have also heard of people making their own hiclears, esp up in Canada.
