Is it a Super H with shutters?

Friend of mine has what he says is a 1953 Super H. Tag says "SH 4779 J". But the confusing thing (to me) is that it has a shutter crank and the shutter lever on the right front near the radiator. No shutters are in the radiator area.

My 1950 H does not have shutters. I've heard that by 1950 IH did not make tractors with shutters anymore.

So what's the deal with that Super H?

Shutters were installed until at least 1961. My 650D has a good set.

I think all distillate and kerosene tractors had shutters as part of that option.

It might have been optional on Diesels. They run cold when lightly loaded.

I believe any tractor built before 1962 could be ordered with shutters. After that I think winterfronts were owner installed. I installed a winterfront on my 1980 S1954 w/DT466 IH truck.

The distillate fuel option, which required shutters, was available all the way up through the Farmall 350 and 450. About 1958 or there abouts.

The shutters were avail all thru the H series and then later models even the distillate models were available till middle 50s

As already posted shutters were a attachment that could be put on any type fuel SH. Posted serial # indicates a gasoline. Not to common to find the parts on a gasoline SH though.
If I was looking at the tractor it would cause me to check just in case the original engine was replaced with another, maybe just a H one. Especially if no other shutter controls were found on the chassis.

I'll see tomorrow if I can write down the numbers on the motor and get back to you so you can tell me what motor it is.

The fuel tank is a single one, with only one fuel cap.

If memory serves me right (that's another troublesome thing more and more as I wander thru my 70s) on the Super M the front of the tractor frame is kind of squared off compared to an M so is the frame squared off with a Super H also? This front end looks just like my H.

Thanks for all you guy's answers to these questions.

I brought my H and #8 plow to the weekend Badger Steam & Gas Show here in Wisconsin as International is the featured brand this year.
Two brothers brought 46 real nice Farmalls and Internationals (bachelors, of course) and another guy brought 20 more. It's a sea of red on the grounds. Maggie Mae will be singing late tomorrow afternoon.

Front end would be the same as most H tractors on a SH with the serial # you posted. The suffix letters or lack of some after the serial # indicates the tractor came as a gasoline fuel tractor, so there would be no extra fuel tank. Tractor may be original and had the shutters, but would check engine numbers just in case.

The lack of any suffix after the serial number indicates a distillate tractor. The gasoline tractor has a "X1" suffix, and the kerosene version has a "X3" suffix.

Different for a SH Rusty. If you notice the people that posted with distillite SH tractors have a A suffix. X with a number after wasn't used on Supers. Original poster just has a J suffix for a tractor originaly equiped rockford clutch.

O.K. I've been following this thread since it started, and thought I had read every reply, but apparently this forum cannot be trusted to show ALL the "unread" replies. I had to go back and read from the beginning to find the replies you referred to.
