Stuck 22-36 Engine

I am going to dismantle my "bad" engine. I have two of these 4 3/4 inch bore monsters. The one I am dismantling is stuck. I have tried things that have not worked...the usual soaking in various fluids. The image shows my access to the parts. I am now proposing that I loosen one rod at a time and then pound down (really up to the top of the block) the sleeve-piston-rod unit.
How hard will it be to pound out the sleeve?
What would be your suggestions as to what steel plate, other device to employ?

From listening to a lot of guys working on machines like that, the rods need to be separated off. It takes too much effort to deal with more than one at a time. Also, is the camshaft loose? Sometimes they are "tight" too, along with the crank, making for a monumental task in trying to rotate stuff.

My 2 cents.
 
Your local auto machine shop can probably press out the pistons. They can do the sleeves too. Shouldn't be a problem since it looks you have the crankshaft removed. Hal

NO, the crank is still there! Look again. I want to loosen one of the rods by removing its cap and then tap on something against the bottom of the sleeve.
 
Take the rod caps off and see whats stuck. I have had them so bad two sleeves were broken in the middle and the two on the ends pushed out and were good enough to reuse, pulled those sleeves with a sleeve puller. The other two I had to torch because they were stuck at the bottom of the stroke. On another I took a 2" wide 1/2" thick steel bar and put it on the lip of the sleeve and drove it out with a maul. once you break the o ring and crud they come right out and you can then heat the sleeve with a torch and push them out the bottom or break the sleeve to get the piston.
 
If you can figure out how to get the crank out that would be best. You should be able to get 2 of the pistons moving fairly easily if you take the caps off. I recently got 3 pistons of a F-30 that had been sitting outside with the head off and no covering for several years to break loose with a short 2x4 and 10# sledge. If you can get the crank out of the way for the really stubborn ones, use a 4x4 on the rods to break them loose. Also make sure you know which way the pistons come out. Another reason to get the crank out if you can.
 
i dont know if this will work, but i had an older guy in the shop one time, and he said he would pack the cylinder with dry ice for a while, then drive the piston and sleeve out all at once. i have yet to try it, havent had a motor that was stuck lately to try it on. he said the dry ice would shrink the piston and sleeve enough to break loose so it could be driven out.
 
When I did a Farmall A Back in 1975 with a stuck engine I used a piece of 2 x 2 oak and big hammer and I drove against the connecting rod. Two the pistons came out with the sleeves and 2 pistons came out without the sleeves. Can't you pull that crankshaft by unbolting the rods? It doesn't have main bearing caps. You can also pour some diesel fuel or kerosene on top of one piston at a time and set it on fire and see if that free's the piston. Don't do this near a building or around anything flammable. The heat should free them. Hit the rod or sleeve while it is still hot. Hal
 
Here is what I did on two badly stuck Regular pistons, I took the rod caps loose first, then I took a long rod and placed one end against the wrist pin retaining bolt head and hammered on the rod with a big hammer, the piston and sleeve began moving after 2 or 3 big licks and came totally loose after a few more hits. I then placed the sleeve/piston assembly in my press and pressed the piston down and out of the sleeve, I did not damage either the piston or sleeve.
 
I had a 10-20 that I soaked for months with no results. I scraped everything I could out with a scraper and poured about an inch of motor oil in each one. then I tossed in a piece of rag with some gas on it and lit it. I kept it going just enough to keep the oil boiling in there for a couple hours. I figured that I couldn't make it any worse. After it went out I sprayed a bunch more PB Blaster and walked away for a week. I stuck a spud bar down in there and it broke with fairly mild force. I cleaned it all up and put it back together with no problems. It really needed 2 new sleeves but it runs good with no smoke. Good enough for me.
