M clutch repair

I need to put a clutch in my '51 M. I will be getting a new pressure plate, disc, throwout bearing and pilot bearing.

My question is, what other parts do I need e.g. seals etc?

Also as long as I am "in there" is there anything else you would recommend I replace?

Thanks for all of your great advice and help here. I am having a ball with the M!!!!!

Brad

possible flywheel resurface. check front trans seal for leackage.check the ring gear for wear.

give mike a shout at steel wheel ranch and check prices with him too. he sent me the whole she-bang for my super m, got it in a couple days, way reasonable price.

OOPS - One more question please,

Looking at parts suppliers it looks like there is an 11" and 12" clutch for the M. Do I have to take it apart and then order or was the different size based on serial number/year. Mine is a '51 M.

Thanks!!!!

Either of these will require a split of the tractor. But do it if it needs it.
Blue spots on the FW, or a wear spot or groove wider than an eithth inch, or deeper than .010, would influence me to split it for a resurface. Be careful to keep the clutch PP surface to friction surface stock. (step depth) Jim

You need to find out if you have a 11" or a 12".You don"t have to split the tractor for and 11".A 12" you must split the tractor.More than likely you have an 11.

Thanks folks for your help and answers. The clutch has no play in it, it grinds going into gear and one set of forks is out of position compared to the others. I have a cousin who is about 4 miles from where the tractor is who has "split" these before - even has the stands and a fork lift to hold it up - so that part should be fairly easy.

Is there a way I can tell if the clutch is an 11" or 12" before I take it apart so I can have the parts prior to tearing it apart? Would the tractor S/N be a reference to the clutch diameter?

Thanks again

Yes, the serial number would indicate which clutch you have, but after 50 to 60 years, who really knows what is in there?

It's best to split the tractor, find out what is needed, and then order the parts. More often than not, everything you need will be on your doorstep in just 2 to 3 days,

Thanks to all who replied to all of my questions. As I mentioned earlier I am having a ball with the M, BUT, it sure makes it easier to have the fun with all of the knowledge here and your willingness to share it (so quick too!!!!)
