Farmall M Hydraulic Questions

Hello, I"ve got a couple hydraulics questions regarding my Farmall M. I"ve inherited this great tractor and found an old front end loader that I"d like to add. The belly pump has two NPT ports on the left side and an NPT port on the right. I"ve been able to verify that there is some pressure building on the right side port, but am unclear as to the function of the left ports. Are they both return lines? Is the right side port the only high pressure supply? I"ve also found that to get any pressure I have to pull the pump actuation rod far past the bump/notch on the rod that I thought would have been the run position. What"s going on here? Thanks in advance for your help.

The bump notch is the at rest position. That is correct. Pull for pressure, push to lower. All 3 ports are pressure. The rear one on one side is delayed lift. Front port has priority. There is no "high pressure" Those pumps only put out like maybe 900 lbs when they were new and that was a Long time ago.

all three ports are pressure supply's. the hydraulics are set up as a one way system. pulling the control rod all the way back toward you gives up pressure. centering the rod is the "hold" position. all the way in is the "down position. the 3 ports were for a mounted cultivator. a delay valve was used on the rear culitvatorso it would drop in the ground after the front set, so you didnt tear out the headlands. same for the up function. when you reached the end of the row, you raised the cultivator, the front came up first, the the rears came up shortly after. teh clutch must be out for the hydraulics to work.

Rear port on left side is delayed for rear mounted stuff. The front and the one on the right are the same single way return is the same port. Dont be pulling rod back without a cycl hooked upunless you want to damage the pump. If you want two way you will need to add a diferent valve to the system.

Hello again. Thank you all for your help, it"s been great. The loader is now hooked up to the front left port and an external valve is plumbed in to allow up/down control of the cylinders. The return line is "teed" into the drain port at the bottom of the belly pump. My next challenge will be to add a vent port to the fill cap as it built up air pressure during use...any advice?

The original cap for the fill tube IS vented, but the vent MAY be plugged. If yours has just a common pipe cap, drill a 1/8" hole directly in the center, and then add some felt to the inside to filter out the dust.
