so, is there really a specific pre-cleaner jar for the aftermarket pre-cleaners, or will a 1 pint, square widemouth work? I have been doing a bit of research, and found that Ball was NOT allowed to make wide mouth jars during the war (1942 - 1945). So, then next question would be when did the pre-cleaner's come into use?

Of course, this would be based upon wanting to be "correct".......

The original jar was a "BALL" Special wide mouth. I have one on the shelf behind my desk.

Any jar that will fit is perfectly acceptable to anyone BUT the most persnickity correct police.

(quoted from post at 14:15:19 08/17/10) Does the jar type air cleaner do a better job than the type without the jar?

The jar type is actually a "pre-cleaner" and in dusty conditions it will allow more hours of use BEFORE the oil bath cleaner needs to be serviced. It is designed to be used in conjunction with the standard oil bath.

I [u:15219d27c6]know[/u:15219d27c6] our late Super C had one and I'm pretty sure the '49 C had one before that... both tractors were bought new. I don't know who made them, but Dad worked for Donaldson (Oelwein, Ia.) one winter and they made air cleaners for just about everyone.

Thanks for the replies, and it is as I expected. Any wide mouth pint is fine, and if you want to be "correct", Ball Special.

It was interesting to find that the Ball jar company was not allow to make wide mouth jars during WWII. I am still scratching my head a bit as to why. The article may be BS, but if true, it did not go into the details on why the US placed the ban.

thanks again to all.

ps. Anyone know when these pre-cleaner first came into use?

I don't know for sure, but the pre-cleaner IS listed under "attachments" in my original M parts catalog, dated 8-15-45.
