McCormick Deering 10-20 questions

I found a 1929 mccormick 10-20 today for sale, very original, on full steel, side curtins, still has brass carb. on it as well. Had some questions about the tractor, first of all, did any of them have a PTO? this one doesn"t. Also were all of them all fuel tractors? I only saw one gas tank on it and was wondering if it had 2 tanks or where the gas/kerosene would go. i noticed petcocks on the valve cover, do you have to put oil in them everytime you start it?

PTO was an option. There should be a small separate gasoline tank behind the main tank. Yes you have to manually oil the valve train every time you start it.

We had a 1926 10-20 and it had a pto and I think it had a cover over it. We ran the IH combine off that pto. Hal

i don"t think this one has the small tank on it, do these tractors kick back with the hand crank much? so how much oil do you put in the valve train before you start it? i"ve never been around one of these tractors, anything in particular i need to look for the next time i go look at it?

The very early 10-20's in 23 and 24 had 2 compartment tanks ALL the rest had the small gas tank.
Book says 100 drops of oil daily for the valve train.

If the carb is good and the mag is spot on they start right up if you know the procedure. If things are not well kept and you don't follow procedures with things like manual impulse couplings and where to hold your thumb and head they can put you in the hospital quick. Nothing to be afraid of if your willing to learn how its done.

We had a 10-20 on our ND farm and we never added any oil to the valve train. Also never had any trouble with it because of not oiling.

what is the procedure on starting? I don't know it, i'll admit that. so your saying this tractor had the small gas tank at one time, someone must have taken it off at some point? I have a JD A that i still run on kerosene, it has to be above 180 degrees to switch over, how hot does the 10-20 have to be? will it start on kerosene? I only saw a oil pressure gauge on the tractor, no temp gauge. sorry for all the questions, very seldom do i run into something i have no clue about farm equipment wise ;o)

If you look there should be TWO sets of openings on the valve cover. Hinged flip caps for oiling the valve train. (For the man that said they never oiled theirs maybe someone had plumbed in a pressure line?) Then there will be or at least was at one time a set of threaded Primer Cups that you can add a spoonful of gasoline for starting. Yes, you must start with gasoline and then switch to kerosene once it's hot. I use a curtain over the radiator to help with warm up. Kerosene tractors are rum hot, right up next to boiling. So when you see it chuffing out a little steam you know it's hot. I check the radiator with my hand. When the top tank gets too hot to hold my hand on it I switch over. They will start on kerosene if they are hot but if it cools off you better switch back to gasoline and start over.

Knew you were a Deere guy as soon as you said ALL FUEL. The 10-20 gear drive is a Kerosene tractor. The brass petcocks you saw on the valve cover are the primer cups, the valve oilers are up there too but not brass. Lots of these tractors were later run on gasoline only and things like gas tanks and primer cups were removed.
Since we cant see what is on this tractor in particular, since the gas tank is gone I suspect the tractor was run on strait gas. Some of the kerosene equipment may no longer function or even be there. We also don't know which mag you have on there, starting procedure is different depending on mag equipment. Can u get pics or can the current owner give you a starting lesson?
