reversing a 400

I have a 400 that runs good I would like to reverse and put a loader on the back. how did they used to change the tranny to run reverse and does anyone have pics of steering mods, clutch, brake mods etc etc etc?

On most tractor reversing the tranny is easy. You pull the cover off the rear end and switch which side the ring gear sits on and by doing so you have more back-am-up gears

Ya, getting the gears opposite is easy , however, the rest of that project would get pretty complicated. I have only seen this done on the older Allis tractors like a WC.

You can get all the misc reversing do-dads off a cotton picker. Why waste a year of your life making the stuff when it is available and engineered properly?

Any M picker and later (like 400-450) will have the right stuff. Don't you need a vacation in AZ, TX, or CA? Heck, take your trailer and bring the whole picker back. Leave the basket and air system behind so you don't get the notion to restore the picker

When we try to access the link on "Modern", all we get is a blank page, so here's the picture!

I have a reversed F-12,with a jeep engine/tranny(long story)that has a'Lion"hi-lift(20 ft.)loader.We use it almost daily,It would probally win the uglyest tractor award!

(quoted from post at 17:52:34 08/15/10)That is the weirdest thing I've ever seen. What is the reasoning for this?

It makes for a very compact and maneuverable loader tractor.

With the narrow front end in back, the tractor will almost pivot around on one "rear" wheel (now front wheels).

Traction is GREAT with the loader over the rear axle like that.

OK Wardner, you have me looking...do you have any leads on any? I have the loader and tractor, need the reverse elements....

No leads. I am in MA and we don't grow cotton. I bought a cotton picker PTO from a farmer in Bakersfield on a trip to CA. He had about four old pickers and a bunch of picker parts on many pallets. I don't have a name or address but he was south of town.

I'd place a wanted ad here for the parts you want. Or, better yet, go to cotton country and talk to the owners of cotton farms. Somebody will steer you in the right direction. It could be a salvage yard or another cotton farmer.

Fork lifts were also reverse operated but I have never seen a M sized or later tractor that was factory converted .

Reversing tractor involves about a half day of shop activity with a good hoist and knowing what you are doing, plus a transmission cover that will allow putting the shifting forks on the opposite side of the pinion shaft. Some tractors came with a three cornered plate on the cover in addition to the shifter lever. Lever will work, but shifter rails with forks are different. They probably could be cut, turned and rewelded if a permanent conversion. Once you get the cover off the tractor, slide axles out, remove brake pinions and housings on each side, remove the ring gear and differential and swap to the other side of the pinion gear. Be sure to check gear shimming before/during reassembly. I have done this job in the past; if you have questions, email or call. Pretty sure I can find part numbers and pictures. I may have a cotton picker transmission cover off an "M" but not a "400". If you are looking, a low drum picker tractor was reversed in this way. High drum picker tractors had a bull gear housing bolted onto different axle housings, similar to an "MV" tractor, but different.
