Farmall 400 rear tires?

The 15.5s really need to be mounted on 14" wide rims, but they'll probably work just fine on narrower rims, and no, the tires would not be too wide for the 400. I've seen quite a few Ms with widened rims and 15.5s installed.

I really like the look of 14.9's, and yes, you can still buy them. A
400-450-560 with 14.9's will be a little taller, and if you look at
the tractor from a distance, it will be parallel with the ground. If
you put on 15.5's the tractor will slant to the rear. It is all about
what you want.

I deal with Carleton Farm Supply here in Michigan. They are a I.H dealer of some 70 years and they told me that the 16.9 x 38s were a factory replacement size tire for my 52 Super M .

I have them on my 52 and they work great.

James Rumph don"t want to ruffle you, but I find that hard to believe. I think the widest rim IH was selling for a SM in 1952 was 11 inch and only a 12 inch for later SM. 13X38 or the 14.9x 38 size was a option for SM and 400 tractors. I need some covincing to believe IH recomended a 16.9 tire as a replacement on those rims or as a added strain on the tractor drive train. Sure 16.9 tires have and can be installed and maybe for some special soil or working conditions they could be the best.

15.5 is an original tire, it didn't replace anything. Apparantly began manufacture at about the same time as the tires began to use cross section instead of tread width. It does not correspond to any earlier size. 14.9 is the same as as the old 13, readily available.

Well when i bought my 52 it had factory rims with 16.9 x 38s on them and it appeared fine .

Meaning it didn't look wrong or buldging side walls.
I was talking with the owner of Carleton Farm Supply and he told me that I.H found that the 16.9 x 38s worked better and they installed them as a factory replacement .

I'm not going to get into a debate over it, this what i was told !!!

To be honest with you i wouldn't want a smaller tire , there is plenty of power to handle them.

I have sence put them on stamped 18" wide rims and pull with it.
