old piston sleeves

I"m thinking of reusing the old sleeves that were in in my block. ('45 A C-113)I am concerned that they wont seal. Anyone know if this is a "good idea"? I was gonna go with new sleeves and all but I am looking at the $$ saved. Approx $150 bux depending on where you look...

depends what your doin with the tractor. i dought it will be a work horse, so i dont see any problem reusing them if there in decent shape. sure beets the hel.. out of them rusted soaker sleeves loosened with magic oils everyone talks about! soak them for months or years and the engine runs fine,... i dont think so.

If they don't have bad ridge at top and hone them so the new rings can seat. It they have a ridge it might brake the top ring. You could cut the ridge out with a ridge cutter.Just some ideas.

If you go with new sleeves and have that crankshaft checked for wear and install new bearings it will last another 50 years with periodic maintenance. Be sure to clean that area below where your new seals for your sleeves
are installed of any rust or dirt. When I did this A back in 1975 the sleeve kit was $80.00 from my local IH dealer. The whole tractor was in sad shape, but for $100.00 I shouldn't complain that included the 16-inch moldboard plow. Hal

The most important thing when re-using sleeves is whether or not the sleeve is egg shaped or "out of round". various oversize pistons and rings are available. If the sleeves have ridge, then use a ridge reamer and then hone. Mic the sleeve, and get the appropriate oversize rings.
there are also other considerations too, like if the bore size is much bigger than the pistons, rings won't cure that.

There are many factor's to consider when reusing sleeves and pistons, but if you take them into account, the engine can run like new if you get things right.

Get them miked where the top ring travel ends. If they are .010 or more, replace them. even .010 is borderline, depending on what it is to be used for.
