well i was out using the tractor the other day and was moving some dirt around going from forward to reverse and high to low.made a complete stop and moved it into the high side and it will not engage.low side still works but but constantly pops out of low when under a load.it has done that since i have owned it.it never has popped out of high but now it will not even engage to high.

any tips or pointers that you guys might check first will be appreciated.thanks in advance!!

Take it apart. See what's wrong. Fix it.

That's about the best advice anyone can give in this situation. It's definitely not something you can simply "adjust away."

The 3414 is an industrial model and distinctly different from the farm model. Aside from the engine there isn't much in common, especially when a shuttle shift is added to the mix.

Of course, every time I make a post like this, it inspires someone with industrial tractor expertise to come out of the woodwork and provide more useful information... So, you can thank me later :)

I would agree with mkirsch, at least get a parts catalog or call a older established CaseIH dealer & ask for copies from computer or copy from parts catalog, I doubt if adjustment will fix the problem, sounds like a worn fork or spline, this particular tractor was very well engineered, I delivered a new one to the city where I lived in the mid 60s, this gives you a clue of my age & also the tractor, IH back then, 3414 was a B414 with Construction Division loader and frame + front axle + hydra-shuttle transmission with fast reverser pedals, IH Construction (CE) also made a 3514 (504 INTERNATIONAL) & 3616 (606) same design, heavier, tractors & bigger engines, now Komatsu.

High range works with a sliding gear. Either the gear is broken, or . . . the shifter and fork is not working to push it into place. Can easily happen just from a broken roll or groove pin. Does the shifter feel like it's going where it ought to?

Regardless, you're going to have to pull the trans top-cover off to see what the culprit is.

Some 3414s are setup just like B-275 and B-414 farm tractors and others are quite different. Can have a gear reverser, a torque converter drive, etc. If you just have a clutch driven machine with a hi-low gear range, I suspect you have shift linkage problems.

Hi-low range shift handle attaches to the crossshaft with a 1/4" X 1 1/4" long groove pin.

That hi-low crossshaft attaches to a hi-low shift cam via a 3/16" X 1 1/8" long groove pin.

The hi-low shift cam attaches to the hi-low shift rail/fork with an ear that sits in a groove in the shaft. The ear can break , but I doubt that's your problem.

The hi-low shift rail/fork has a fork that sits in the gear-collar (gear the moves).

With all of the above, I'd suspect a broken groove pin first. If so, a cheap easy fix.
