I have a 1948 Farmall M with serial no FBK 173162 x1 with a TA. If it`s not a TA, it sure works like one. Unlike the MTA, this M has short lever down by the clutch. Has anyone out there seen this? I can`t seem to find any answers. Can someone educate me? THANKS!

Does the lever go down next to the brake drum near the axle housing? If it does what you have is an M&W hand clutch, T/A did not appear till 1954 I believe on the Super MTA. The M&W hand clutch allows you to have "live" pto.

I've seen some TAs that worked like an M&W hand clutch. Pull the lever back and the tractor stops moving. :)

Sounds like your M has a 9 spd tranny. M&W were two companies thaat offered this aftermarket option. Basically gives you an overdrive in 1-4 gears. I had an M that had one of these kits. The lever by the clutch is the shifter for the "overdrive. Lot of them were sold back in the day

Sounds like your M has a aftermarket 9 speed transmission. M&W and Heisler were two companies that offered this kit. Basically gives the tractor an overdrive in 1-4 gears. Lever down by the clutch is the "overdrive" shifter. I use to have an M that had a 9 spd.

You have gotten some good responses to your thread already and probably can't add much. I do have a Farmall M with the Heisler 9 speed so know a little about them. The lever I believe without looking on my M is mounted on the top transmission cover in the forward left corner. It has a rod attached which enters the side of the transmission under the battery box. When the lever is forward you have the additional faster speeds and when in the rear position you have the normal gear speeds the tractor was designed with. Another point you need to know, if it is a Heisler 9 speed is that the PTO and the belly pump are also sped up and probably quite easy to over speed them as they weren't designed for excessive rpms. My M has a belly pump disconnect lever on the right side of the tractor so you can disconnect the hydraulic pump when running with the higher speeds. I really like the Heisler and it looks a whole lot like something which would have come from the factory, Hal.

You say it works like a TA...

How does it work?

The TA is shift-on-the-fly, 2-speed transmission. It gives you 2 speeds in each gear: Direct, and about 20% underdrive.

You pull the lever back and latch it, the tractor shifts down. Release the latch and let the lever ahead, and the shifts up.

In 2nd, if you pull the TA lever you get a speed somewhere between 1st and 2nd, for example.

If you can do that with this little lever, you have something truly unique on your hands. Probably the only one in the world.

Odds are you have a Heisler or M&W "9-speed" gearbox, which simply gives you 4 extra gears between 4th and 5th.

Thanks everyone for the info. Would anybody have an idea what this tractor is worth? It runs great and tires are fair. All the tin is good shape.

Realistically, depending on your idea of what "great," "fair," and "good" are, the price could range from about $900 to $3000.

I wouldn't pay $3000 for an M unless it had no visible leaks, a pretty darned decent paint job, and NEW tires with the nubs still on them.

You pull the lever back and the tractor stops moveing, just like a TA that is out? Then you have a M@W live pto
