1566 or 1586?

Looking for power to pull a 12 row planter. Which would you choose? I don't like the rear diesel tank on the 86 but wonder if there are notable other differences. I grew up green and last owned a 4440, liked the transmission but IH engines always sounded so smooth I want one! Which would you choose and why?

personally i would rather have the 1586. nicer cab and even thought you don't like the fuel tank it holds a lot more fuel.

I pull a 12 row IH 900 with a 1086 with 16.9X38 rear tires and duals.

I'd find the one in the best condition and buy it. The 1586 and 1566 tractors were "frontline" tractors through the early 1980s and had the living **** worked out of them. The farmers that bought that size of tractor didn't let them sit and given the economics of the time several received very haphazard maintenance. Finding one in very good shape will take some time, finding one of each to choose from could take forever. That being said the 1586 is a much more comfortable tractor to run.

I agree with the other poster though - a 1486 or even a 1086 will get the job done on a 12 row.

The 1086 will pull a 12 row quite well. Find one with the updated TA and a recent rear end. You will find the 1086 to be a lot easier to find. But, like stated on the 1586, a lot got turned up and pulled real hard.

I pull a 12 row with my 806 just fine . I have 400 gallon saddle tanks on it and last spring was way less than ideal condition's .
I wouldn't want a 15 , I would rather have a 10 or 14 to plant with .

On the 1566, you're either going to be out in the open or inside a hot, rattle trap of a cab.

The 1586's cab will be quieter and more comfortable.

...that's assuming you're looking at decent tractors here...

You'll be able to run the 1586 twice as long without refueling IIRC.

If it were my choice I would pick a no cab 9/10/1466 or a 9/10/1486 w/cab, selling parts for all these since the 70s the 15 series planetary was a nightmare of pieces, ball brngs, shafts, gears, snap rings, and typical of planetarys they were not durable under high load. They also had 1 less speed in speed transmission, 1-2-3, 1486 down was 1-2-3-4. Also IPTO was single speed large shaft only.
