574 spark plugs

I have a 1972/1973 574,when purchased the tractor 6 years ago,the plugs used where Champion D18Y.They where gapped @ 0.025".Curreny have points but will be switching to electronic ignition.Does anyone know the proper heat range? This is a bone stock engine.Never been rebuilt.Plugs are fowling right now,but I wanted to tackle ignition before working on the carberation. Thanks for any feedback.

Just my 2 cents, before I started modifing that engine by changing the ignition system , I'd get it running right. It was built to run on points & the plugs that are in it, mine runs just fine. I'd look to the carb first, timing, maybe check the compression & adjust the valves too.

D16 D15Y D18Y D21 were all used, D16 was medium load, D15Y heavy load, D21 was light to medium to keep from fouling, D21 did not last as long, D18Y wasnt used by IH much, I am not sure you ought to modify distributor, points & cond, rotor, cap, wires, are available cheap everywhere, simple system worked well.

Thanks for the info RPM. I'm doing the ignition upgrade because point are such an out of date technology. Too much maintnance and poor performance. I use the tractor for land maintance & snow removal [ not a "hot rod" ],but I like it to "run like a top". Solid State ignition is proven reliable. Do you know if plug gap remains the same [no matter which one I use ]? Thanks for the help.

I wouldnt change the gap no matter what ignition was used. I never found a electronic ignition that was that durable in the long run, I agree they are the greatest thing on cars & pickups now. Your situation however is different than most farmers with this tractor and thats what I am most familiar with.
